Assistant to the Villain

Hannah Nicole Maehrer

Adult Fantasy Romance

Once Upon a Time meets The Office in Hannah Maehrer’s laugh-out-loud viral TikTok series turned novel, about the sunshine assistant to an Evil Villain…and their unexpected romance.

ASSISTANT WANTED:Notorious, high-ranking villain seeks loyal, levelheaded assistant for unspecified office duties, supporting staff for random mayhem, terror, and other Dark Things In General. Discretion a must. Excellent benefits.

With ailing family to support, Evie Sage’s employment status isn’t just important, it’s vital. So when a mishap with Rennedawn’s most infamous Villain results in a job offer—naturally, she says yes. No job is perfect, of course, but even less so when you develop a teeny crush on your terrifying, temperamental, and undeniably hot boss. Don’t find evil so attractive, Evie.

But just when she’s getting used to severed heads suspended from the ceiling and the odd squish of an errant eyeball beneath her heel, Evie suspects this dungeon has a huge rat…and not just the literal kind. Because something rotten is growing in the kingdom of Rennedawn, and someone wants to take the Villain—and his entire nefarious empire—out.

Now Evie must not only resist drooling over her boss but also figure out exactly who is sabotaging his work…and ensure he makes them pay.

After all, a good job is hard to find.

My Opinion

4 out of 5 stars (4 / 5) What a fun premise for a book! I’m not shy about my love for villains so this sounded like the perfect read.

Evie has just been fired from her job. Her family relies on her job to provide as her father is sick and she has a young sister. In a meeting of chance, she runs into Trystan and he offers her a job. Now this job is unlike any other. While it is a lot of clerical work, she is also privy to his villain activities. Yes, she learns that he is the “evil villain” that everyone gossips about.

Evie has a unique personality. While she was a bit much for me at first, she ended up growing on me. She talks a lot and has no filter so the words that come out of her mouth are usually uncouth or obtrusive. For Trystan, this is exactly what he needs and he relishes her and her work ethic.

Trystan is know for his killings and torture. It’s only vaguely mentioned in the book and mostly laughed at. How he beheaded men, thrown people off buildings if they upset him and more. He did do these things but it was mostly mentioned in jest.

Both Trystan and Evie uncover something sinister and work together to abolish it. Their relationship becomes comfortable but the desecration of his empire is hanging by threads.

I have many theories for book 2 and I cannot wait to see what happens! It was a fabulous ending that had my mind whirling with possibilities.

General content summary: F words= 13, many heads severed from bodies, tortured body of dead man, parent and sibling deaths (previous), many deaths (nonchalantly talked about like throwing people off the roof etc, no real details), physical violence (deaths, multiple, broken bones), explosion (injuries), alcohol, creature attacks many people (blood), sword deaths (some details, multiple), f/f relationship and mention of intimacy, attempted sexual assault (few details), m/f kisses, sedatives given unwillingly, throat slit (blood, death).
