House of Beating Wings (The Kingdom of Crows #1)

Olivia Wildenstein

Adult Fantasy

FREE THE CROWS, FALLON, AND THEY WILL MAKE YOU QUEEN.

Until an oracle predicted my regal future, I’d never imagined myself rising above the curve of my round ears. After all, I was the magicless halfling loved by beasts but loathed by every pure-blooded faerie at court. Well . . . by all but one.

Dante Regio, prince of Luce, had owned my heart since he gave me my first kiss. If gathering a slew of iron relics could help me overthrow the current monarch and crown his brother to rule at my side, then treasure hunting I’d go.

If only the oracle had warned me what winged demon I was releasing into the world.

And that I’d become this demon’s obsession.

Fans of Sarah J. Maas and Mary E. Pearson will devour this epic fantasy romance full of deceit, betrayal, and false loves that could swallow a person whole.

My Opinion

4.5 out of 5 stars (4.5 / 5) My book club picked this one for July. I was dragging my feet because this baby is long! Almost 600 pages long! But once I started it, I couldn’t put it down!

Wildenstein is an indie author who is making waves with her books. What drew me in initially was her writing. Within just a few pages, it flowed so easily that I got wrapped up in the story way earlier than expected.

Because I didn’t really read fantasy until I started this blog, sometimes the fantasy elements are hard to picture. Fae tend to be difficult for me, minus just a few books. And now I can add this series to that list. It wasn’t “extravagantly fantasy” (Yes, I’m going with that phrase), so the world and the people were all playing out fabulously in my mind.

And who would’ve thought crows could be so interesting?? I love Fallon for her gumption, even if she did jump into this quest without thinking, and I love her loyalty and soft heart. Phoebus was my fav, as he should be for everyone, because he made me laugh multiple times!

While Fallon enters into this quest to save the crow kingdom, she has huge opposition (to say the least) and yet she kept going. The story built intensity well and carried throughout the book. Needless to say, I ignored all my ARCs and downloaded book 2. I think I’m hooked!

General content summary: F words= 45, C***= 2, water creature attack/bite, alcohol (multiple), prostitutes, m/f passionate kissing, misogyny, gay male character, talk of virginity and losing it, intimacy (losing virginity, foreplay, detailed), arm cut off, near drowning, beheading (few details).
