They Both Die at the End

Adam Silvera

Adam Silvera reminds us that there’s no life without death and no love without loss in this devastating yet uplifting story about two people whose lives change over the course of one unforgettable day.

On September 5, a little after midnight, Death-Cast calls Mateo Torrez and Rufus Emeterio to give them some bad news: They’re going to die today.

Mateo and Rufus are total strangers, but, for different reasons, they’re both looking to make a new friend on their End Day. The good news: There’s an app for that. It’s called the Last Friend, and through it, Rufus and Mateo are about to meet up for one last great adventure—to live a lifetime in a single day.

My Opinion

“Love is a super power we all have. But it’s not always a super power I’d be able to control. Sometimes it’ll go crazy and I shouldn’t be scared if my power hits someone I’m not expecting it to.”

3.5 out of 5 stars (3.5 / 5) I didn’t quite know what to expect with this book, but I loved the premise so I knew I needed to give it a shot. Two young men are told they are going to die within the next 24 hours. It’s then up to them to decide what to do with their last day.

It’s an interesting concept, and it made me think. I was annoyed though that Silvera never said how it was known they were going to die. I would’ve liked that bit of knowledge. But overall it was a good read. It was hard to relate to the characters and I didn’t connect with them much. Their choices were odd to me and I felt their last hours were almost wasted at times.

Overall, I liked that the two characters were able to find each other and meaningful interactions before their deaths but I didn’t really feel much emotion reading it, even during their deaths.

Content Summary: Language is high, including 25 F words, there are a few crude sexual remarks, two young men kiss, the discussions of life, death (and how people die), possible afterlife and more may be intense for some.

  1. I’ve heard so many mixed ratings for this. I don’t think I would enjoy it and I’m glad I didn’t read it. 🙈
