YA Dystopia

If you ain’t scared, you ain’t human.

When Thomas wakes up in the lift, the only thing he can remember is his name. He’s surrounded by strangers—boys whose memories are also gone.

Nice to meet ya, shank. Welcome to the Glade.

Outside the towering stone walls that surround the Glade is a limitless, ever-changing maze. It’s the only way out—and no one’s ever made it through alive.

Everything is going to change.

Then a girl arrives. The first girl ever. And the message she delivers is terrifying.

My Opinion

4 out of 5 stars (4 / 5) My kids and I each read this years ago. The suspense is high and addicting.

Thomas wakes up in a large metal box and finds himself thrown into a society that is run by teenage boys. There are huge walls around their living area and outside those walls is a gigantic maze. Presumably, the maze is the way out but in the 2 years some of the boys have been there, nobody has solved it.

This had a bit of a Lord of the Flies feel to it. The boys had successfully built a society with what they have been given. It is definitely an exciting and suspenseful story with “villains” of the story along with the “heroes.” What I liked most was the mystery. The first time I read this I just had to know the ending. My curiosity was so strong and it carried throughout the book. I was glued to the pages just to find out what the maze was and why.

This second time reading it through I noticed it still had the high suspense. I feel it will be a book that will do well with teens for quite a long time. It’s unique and those characters are easy to connect with.

AUDIO REVIEW: Mark Deakins did a great job with the suspense and the male voices. However I felt his female voice was not done as well.
