The Bone Shard Daughter (The Drowning Empire #1)

Andrea Stewart

The emperor’s reign has lasted for decades, his mastery of bone shard magic powering the animal-like constructs that maintain law and order. But now his rule is failing, and revolution is sweeping across the Empire’s many islands.

Lin is the emperor’s daughter and spends her days trapped in a palace of locked doors and dark secrets. When her father refuses to recognise her as heir to the throne, she vows to prove her worth by mastering the forbidden art of bone shard magic.

Yet such power carries a great cost, and when the revolution reaches the gates of the palace, Lin must decide how far she is willing to go to claim her birthright – and save her people.

My Opinion

4 out of 5 stars (4 / 5) I struggled with this one in the beginning. I really didn’t understand the magic, I didn’t understand how this world worked and why the emperor had so much power. Slowly, the pieces fell into place. Once I understood, I was hooked! It is full of lies and deceit, love and kindness.

We hear about the rise of this empire and watch it slowly fall. In between there are details and magic interspersed, giving us bits of information until everything falls into place. There are multiple POVs which were difficult to keep straight at first but toward the end I could see all the storylines coming together beautifully.

Honestly, the magic system, while complex, is the most unique aspect about this book. Once I understood it, it was brilliantly imagined with dark underlining facets. I can’t wait to get my hands on book 2!

Content Summary: minimal language, F/F relationship (no intimacy details beyond kissing and feelings), deaths, killings, towns being completely destroyed (natural causes).
