Fire (Graceling Realm #2)

Kristin Cashore

It is not a peaceful time in the Dells. The young King Nash clings to his throne while rebel lords in the north and south build armies to unseat him. The mountains and forests are filled with spies and thieves and lawless men.

This is where Fire lives. With a wild, irresistible appearance and hair the color of flame, Fire is the last remaining human monster. Equally hated and adored, she had the unique ability to control minds, but she guards her power, unwilling to steal the secrets of innocent people. Especially when she has so many of her own.

Then Prince Brigan comes to bring her to King City, The royal family needs her help to uncover the plot against the king. Far away from home, Fire begins to realize there’s more to her power than she ever dreamed. Her power could save the kingdom.

If only she weren’t afraid of becoming the monster her father was.

My Opinion

3 out of 5 stars (3 / 5) I typically read book 2 of a series because I loved the characters or story of book 1. Changing those characters for book 2 is a bold move that doesn’t always work. Fire begins with a character we know but that character is very briefly seen. This book has a whole new set of characters and time period than Graceling.

It took me a long time to get into this book. I missed Katsa. While Fire is a character I grew to like, I kept waiting for people I already knew to show up. I kept waiting to see what the point of this story was, in connection with book 1. Sadly, it never came.

I’m very curious to see how both books tie into book 3. There are characters from book 1 in book 3 so my mind is reeling with possibilities. Are book 2 and 4 connected? I guess we will see!

Overall, I grew to like Fire and her story but I wasn’t as invested in her as I was Katsa.

Thank you to Penguin Teen for the read-a-long!

  1. I loved the first one but I never continued on with the series. I really dislike it when the author changes the main character in the sequels.
