My Opinion

4 out of 5 stars (4 / 5) This is definitely a #bookstagrammademedoit book.  I promised myself I’d read the super popular books for my blog and this one definitely qualified.

What I liked: It incorporated fantasy into a modern world very well. The fantasy elements never felt out of place and it was exciting throughout. The characters are well thought out and defined.  I would think about the story when I wasn’t reading and to me, that is a big plus.

What I didn’t like: the drama. Ok, I get it, it’s YA, but I haven’t run into this much drama in a book in a long time. The MC was very much a high school girl giving into emotions and hormones. It was actually fairly realistic in that element. I didn’t love the instant lust/love. It felt a bit too much and not believable, even keeping in mind she’s 16. The MC needing to be saved all the time. Remind you of someone? (Cough, cough Bella!) I wanted her to be more independent and less clingy. All of these reminded me too much of Twilight and I wanted it to stand on its own without that influence. There were many more aspects also but none I can get into without giving spoilers. I also wish the MC was a bit more cautious. After seeing a vampire use immense power and cruelty, she claimed she wasn’t scared. I wanted her to be scared but understand. However, she treated the violence as nothing. I wish Wolff would’ve brought the fantasy element in sooner. It felt like forever. I was still entertained but just kept waiting for the story to progress.

I hated comparing this to Twilight! I think it’s inevitable with that cover (even my kids asked if I was reading Twilight) but it was so similar that it was hard not to.

The language was high (multiple F words) and intimacy was very passionate with a lot of kissing and such but it never made it’s way into sex. I highly doubt I can say that for the next book though! The violence was mostly toward the end and had a lot of blood and aggressive fighting. I recommend this for those who love romance, vampires and teen drama.

Tracy Wolff

My whole world changed when I stepped inside the academy. Nothing is right about this place or the other students in it. Here I am, a mere mortal among gods…or monsters. I still can’t decide which of these warring factions I belong to, if I belong at all. I only know the one thing that unites them is their hatred of me.

Then there’s Jaxon Vega. A vampire with deadly secrets who hasn’t felt anything for a hundred years. But there’s something about him that calls to me, something broken in him that somehow fits with what’s broken in me.

Which could spell death for us all.

Because Jaxon walled himself off for a reason. And now someone wants to wake a sleeping monster, and I’m wondering if I was brought here intentionally—as the bait.
