MILA 2.0 (MILA 2.0 #1)
By Debra Driza
No matter what, I wouldn’t let anyone change me…
I wouldn’t let them strip away whatever tiny parts of me were human.
Assuming I had any humanity to lose.

Mila gets a flashback of a girl chained to a chair in a large room. The girl is struggling while a man in a white lab coat comes toward her with a gun. He smashes the gun against the girl’s skull over and over. The girl thrashes against the chains while the man exchanges his gun for a power drill. This memory comes back to Mila many times throughout the book.
Mila comes home to an open door and a ransacked house. Men are in her house. She punches a man in the throat. When he falls, “…there was a sickening but soft snap as his arm fully extended and hit resistance.” She finds 4 men and her mom tied to a furnace and duct tape over her mouth. A man rushes her with a wrench in his hand. Her mom kicks his knee and Mila punches him in the nose. She is grabbed from behind and she head butts him. “I heard the sharp crackle of cartilage crumpling under my skull.” She rams elbow into his kidney and kicks him. His head smashes the back of a shovel. Men are coming at her with a taser. She snaps a wrist backward, “Ignore the crunch and scream, continue to incapacitate.” She immobilizes one with the taser. They both wonder if he is dead. They jump in the car and are now on the run.
Men attack them in their hotel room. They are armed with guns. Mila takes a plug and sinks it into one man’s flesh, into the nerves. He screams and she stifles it with her hand, then debates on jabbing him in the trachea to silence him. She instead shoves a shirt in his mouth. Her mom has immobilized a man also and they tie them up. Mila’s mom holds a gun to the man’s head to get him to talk. She hits his knee with the gun when he doesn’t speak.
Potentially Frightening or Intense Scenes
