Lone Wolf (Orphan X #9)

Gregg Hurwitz

Spy Thriller

Once a black book government assassin known as Orphan X, Evan Smoak left the program, went deep underground, and reinvented himself as someone who will go anywhere, and risk everything to help the truly desperate who have nowhere else to turn. Since then, Evan has fought international crime syndicates and drug cartels, faced down the most powerful men in the world and even brought down a President. Struggling with an unexpected personal crisis, Evan goes back to the very basics of his mission – and this time, the truly desperate is a little girl who wants him to find her missing dog.

Not his usual mission, and not one Evan embraces with enthusiasm, but this unlikely, tiny job quickly explodes into his biggest mission yet. one that finds him battered between twisted AI technocrat billionaires, a mysterious female assassin who seems a mirror of himself, and personal stakes so gut-wrenching he can scarcely make sense of them .

Evan’s mission pushes him to his limit – he must find and take down the assassin known only as the Wolf, before she succeeds in completing her mission and killing the people who can identify her – a teenaged daughter of her last target, and Evan himself. Matched skill for skill, instinct for instinct, Evan must outwit an opponent who will literally stop at nothing if he is to survive.

My Opinion

4.5 out of 5 stars (4.5 / 5) As soon as the book starts, I just know I’m in for fast paced excitement, captivating characters and a journey I cannot predict. The Orphan X series has become a favorite. I am always excited when the next book is offered to me, and even if it wasn’t I would still be keeping up with this series!

While the book is filled with high intensity moments, it still makes time for the endearing and also humorous moments. I find myself laughing out loud multiple times. I’ve gotten to know these characters so well that I look forward to them each time.

X is the greatest. He has technical toys and gadgets, mad fighting skills but is also completely terrified of people and vulnerability. It makes for some great moments.

In this book, X (Evan Smoak), is wrangled into a very minor job that he deems ridiculous. However, his heart wins out and he complies. Because of that, he is led to a much bigger mystery that goes against huge AI companies and a female assassin just as skilled as himself.

If you love fast-paced suspense thrillers with characters you will keep coming back for, this is the series for you!

AUDIO REVIEW: Scott Brick has become a favorite narrator. The emphasis and speed of his words led to intensity or humor. It is brilliantly done and I will keep coming back for more.
