A Bad Day for Sunshine (Sunshine Vicram #1)

Darynda Jones

Thriller

Sheriff Sunshine Vicram finds her cup o’ joe more than half full when the small village of Del Sol, New Mexico, becomes the center of national attention for a kidnapper on the loose.

Del Sol, New Mexico is known for three things: its fry-an-egg-on-the-cement summers, strong cups of coffee – and, now, a nationwide manhunt? Del Sol native Sunshine Vicram has returned to town as the elected sheriff – thanks to her adorably meddlesome parents who nominated her–and she expects her biggest crime wave to involve an elderly flasher named Doug. But a teenage girl is missing, a kidnapper is on the loose, and all of this is reminding Sunshine why she left Del Sol in the first place. Add to that the trouble at her daughter’s new school, plus and a kidnapped prized rooster named Puff Daddy, and, well, the forecast looks anything but sunny.

But even clouds have their silver linings. This one’s got Levi, Sunshine’s sexy, almost-old-flame, and a fiery-hot US Marshall. With temperatures rising everywhere she turns, Del Sol’s normally cool-minded sheriff is finding herself knee-deep in drama and danger. Can Sunshine face the call of duty – and find the kidnapper who’s terrorizing her beloved hometown – without falling head over high heels in love . . . or worse?

My Opinion

5 out of 5 stars (5 / 5) All the stars, every last one! This was amazing!

Sunshine Vicram has been elected as sheriff (she’s still trying to figure out how since she didn’t run) and her first day is full. The biggest case, especially in this small town, is a young teenager gone missing.

This book! All I can say is, who is this Darynda Jones and how can we be friends? I feel like she’s my long lost sister, or my spirit animal or maybe my alter-ego? Either way, we need to be friends. I have not laughed like that in a very long time. How did she do that?

Sunshine is my favorite kind of character; smart, sassy (oooh that’s an understantment) and hilarious. While she takes life very seriously, she has a healthy dose of snark to add to it that her teenage daughter has picked up.

The mother daughter combo and wit reminded me a lot of Gilmore Girls. If I could call this a Funnier-Than-Gilmore-Girls-Snarky-Thriller I would. Can I get away with that? I’m going with it. I just could not get enough of these characters. I ate up both books in very few days (don’t worry, book 2 review is coming soon! Spoiler: It’s just as good.) I wanted it to never end. Then I realized book 3 is not out yet! So forgive me St. Martin’s Press for bombarding you, but I’ve never felt the need for a book so much. My life feels incomplete!

Go into this one blind! Just know I laughed hysterically and when it wasn’t funny, I was still entranced by the rest of the story. Oh who am I kidding? Even when it was more thriller-esque, I was was still laughing. It was not overdone, it jived with my personality perfectly and like I said, I need to be friends with the previously mysterious Darynda Jones.
