My Opinion

(3 / 5) “Beauty was the best camouflage for a monster.”

I really like the story being in Korea and that it used some of their mythology. I learned many things that ended up being true mythology. That being said, the story just didn’t grab me. The characters romance wasn’t as believable as I would think for the experiences they were going through. I didn’t connect with them like I expected. The story itself was fun and interesting with a few slow parts but overall a decent read. Not enough for me to read the second one, however.

For the content, language was mild, sex was mild, violence was higher with details of rituals and shaman magic that may be intense for some.

A young man wipes a young woman’s tears, trailing his fingers along her ears. He cups her cheek and kisses her softly. Then deeper. She pulls him closer, he pulls her onto his lap. They fall asleep together. Possibly sex? Very vague.

A young man kisses a young woman. He cups her face. She shivers. The kiss was heated, fingers twining in her hair. He gasps. 

After a transformation, a woman appears naked. 

Violence, Weapons, Crime, Blood

A young woman feeds on souls. She needs it to maintain immortality. She finds men that have killed others to feed on. 

A young woman holds a man’s neck and siphons his energy. He had killed a young woman. She “screamed too much” and “it was her fault.” If she ripped out his liver it would be fast. Instead she takes all his life energy and he shrivels and dies. 

In the woods, a human-like creature swats away a dog, sending it flying then crumbling. It grabs a young man’s throat. He feels he will die, his body found later bloated and unidentifiable. A young woman grabs the creature’s thumb and breaks it off. The creature places it over the girls chest, making her scream in pain. The three tumble, the creature holding onto one’s hair and the other’s throat. The creature spasms and crumbles into dust. The young woman tries to remove the talisman but when it’s removed, she goes into seizure-like spasms and foams at the mouth. 

A young woman “loses control” with another young woman. A fight?

A young woman is plagued by spirits. She tells another young woman (the Gumiho) who men are that hurt these spirits and that the young woman kills them to feed her life force. 

A young woman tells a young man that she could rip his liver out. Then she grabs his neck and slammed him against a playset,  growling at him. She cracks the playset with her hand and swears she will do it to him. 

A young woman gumiho feels “hunger” often, making her want and crave people’s energy. She wonders about people’s energy and how it would feel to absorb it. 

There are a few bullies. They use words mostly, but they’re mean. One time, a young woman puts bean paste down someone’s shirt. Food is a common thing they use to throw. 

A young woman breaks a window, a young man is brought to the police station for it. 

A mother slaps her teen child.

In a story, a woman gumiho attacks a village and rips out their liver. She is finally met with shamans and they steal her soul. 

A young woman hears a father hit his son. The young woman grabs the man to take his life energy but stops. 

A young woman threatens to break off a man’s fingers. 

A young man runs a finger down a young woman cheek. She slaps it away. The young man is pushed away. 

A young woman admits to pushing another young woman off a bridge. There is talk of attempted murder. Graffiti saying “murderer” is written for her. 

A young woman scrapes fingernail marks on a woman’s cheek. 

During a ritual, a young woman is wracked with immense pain. Something like a curse is placed on her. She cannot breathe. She twists in pain, unable to gain air. A young man grabs something and gets blisters. A young woman attacks a young man, he bites her shoulder. She bites his calf. She pins him. 

Two women threaten a young woman’s life. 

A mother tells her daughter to kill a young man. The mother attacks him but he holds a talisman to her and makes her shriek in agony.

A woman stands over another woman’s body who’s blood is seeping into her clothes. She stabs a young man in the gut. There is so much blood. On her knees, a young woman soaks up his blood with her pants. She desperately tries to save him. Blood and phlegm flow from his lips. He spasms. Dried blood is on a woman’s scalp. She slams her hands onto the young man’s chest. 

A story tells of a young girl eating her animals and their liver then eating her family members. 

Blood drips from a young woman’s nose.

A young woman slaps a young man. 

A woman threatens to kill a young man. 

A father tries to drown his baby in the tub. 

A young woman is hit over the head, losing consciousness. Blood oozes from the wound. A man causes a young man to spasm and lose consciousness from a ritual. A woman and young woman are caused great pain also.
