A young man’s father loves his moonshine and is regularly drunk. At one point he slurs when talking.

A man smells of tobacco. He pulls out a pipe but doesn’t smoke it.

A group of men stand outside a tavern and smoke. The men are drunk.

Three men drink a bottle of corn liquor.

A man puffs on a cigar.

Two bottles of an opium-like painkillers are loaded onto a boat.

A man chews on chewing tobacco.

A man spits tobacco juice.  

A man swigs some laudanum, an opium-like painkiller. He’s about to have surgery.

A young woman gets her first period when she’s on her own and has to figure out how to take care of it while keeping it secret. She also wraps her chest up so she looks flat like a boy.

A woman brings a crying baby to her breast and it sucks.

A young woman is the only one to deliver a baby. The mother screams in agony, stating all the people she knows who have died during childbirth. She screams again (hours into labor) and the young woman checks between her legs as she’s done frequently. The baby slides out into her arms.

A young man leans in to kiss a young woman but changes his mind and brushes her cheek with a kiss. She feels it’s not nearly enough.

Violence, Weapons, Crime, Blood

A young man is abused by his father. At one point a young woman hears a thump when the boy and dad are together but she never asks.  Once he has a black eye.

A young woman grabs a revolver. A young man carries a rifle.

Someone steals some gold.

A father is found by his daughter after being shot in the head. Blood drips down the steps of the porch. She realizes later that the back of his head is probably “in tatters” but the front has a hole that is small and clean. She then finds her mother. She has been shot in the gut, bleeding out. She says a few words then dies.

A man wears a gun to a funeral.

A young woman wonders what it feels like to have a man’s nose Crunch under her fist. She later hopes he will choke.

Three men carry guns. They find a young woman and hold a gun to her head. She realizes they’re killers, not just robbers, even though they’re taking her things. One holds his hand on a knife, another man holds her gun. They shoot when she runs.

Three men joke that a gun never shot straight cause it hit too many Indians in the head.

A man was in a war and states he killed, “too many” Indians.

There is a stampede of buffalo. They ravange  the camp and a man gets trampled. His leg is covered in blood and bones are poking out.  His ribs are broken. The wound needs to be washed and the man screams in pain. When the man passes out, another man reaches into the wound and adjusts the bones. Later, the leg needs to be amputated. It describes the sounds of bone saws and blade into flesh. The man is drugged but resists and has to be held down. Tools are described and the blood that is involved. There is a loud thump when the leg falls.

A few men discuss which band of  Indians they need to remove so white men can settle the area. While passing a group of Indians, one man makes a gun sign with his finger and pretends to shoot them while they look at him. One says that they can shoot them all before an arrow gets to them but another says Indians are too sneaky and they’ll slit your throat at night. While hunting, these men butcher multiple buffalo for sport, not caring to use the meat or anything from the animal.

A woman tries to help another woman through labor, her arms are covered in blood but the mother and baby both die.

Getting stuck under a wagon, a young woman gets a large gash from knee to hip and it bleeds a lot.

While lowering wagons down a steep decline, a wagon gets loose and tramples a man. He is a “bloody mess… doesn’t look like a person anymore.”  They drag/carry his body down and it leaves a bloody trail. They have to bury him with rocks.

An Indian offers a man 3 horses for his daughter. The man laughs and jokes that it would take 6. When the Indian returned with 6 but the man wouldn’t give her they fought.

A young man has to kill an ox because it is needed to feed some dogs but also it was collapsing. Many oxen are discarded as they falter from fatigue and are left to die.

A young man loads his gun as a threat to someone to back off.

Potentially Intense Themes

A young woman shoots at a deer to have meat for her family. She misses but he’s bleeding and she chases him. He collapses and she pierces his kidney with a knife, blood spurting.

A father is very sick and coughs up blood.

It is not uncommon to own slaves.

A baby brother only lives 3 days.

Two men discuss whether it’s really murder to kill an Indian.

A female is buried in a shallow grave. Others come upon it and see it has been dug up and her belongings stolen. A young girl glimpsed dead flesh and is bothered.  It is said she died of cholera. Many men are found to have cholera and are deathly ill. One man is found dead and is wrapped in a blanket and buried. Two more are found dead then buried. They pass many shallow graves.

Measles break out in one family. Plus some.

A young boy is lost for hours and animals almost attack him.

A young woman is found with severe heat stroke; vomiting, blisters, rapid pulse and more. She seizures for minutes then is still. Dead.

An entire family is found almost dead from heat stroke.
