Divine Rivals (Letters of Enchantment #1)

Rebecca Ross

YA Historical Fantasy

When two young rival journalists find love through a magical connection, they must face the depths of hell, in a war among gods, to seal their fate forever.

After centuries of sleep, the gods are warring again. But eighteen-year-old Iris Winnow just wants to hold her family together. Her mother is suffering from addiction and her brother is missing from the front lines. Her best bet is to win the columnist promotion at the Oath Gazette.

To combat her worries, Iris writes letters to her brother and slips them beneath her wardrobe door, where they vanish—into the hands of Roman Kitt, her cold and handsome rival at the paper. When he anonymously writes Iris back, the two of them forge a connection that will follow Iris all the way to the front lines of battle: for her brother, the fate of mankind, and love.

Shadow and Bone meets Lore in Rebecca Ross’s Divine Rivals, an epic enemies-to-lovers fantasy novel filled with hope and heartbreak, and the unparalleled power of love.

My Opinion

4 out of 5 stars (4 / 5) The gods are warring. Many are going out to fight, even Iris’s brother Forrest. In her worried state, she writes him a letter and puts it under her door. Magically, one returns. But it’s not Forrest. Iris strikes up a relationship with the person through letters. When given the chance to become a war correspondent, she jumps at the chance to write but hopefully find Forrest also.

Iris was an easy character to like. She loved with all her heart, even if she shouldn’t. Going to the war opened her heart more but broke it many times. The scenes she saw were horrid and hard to grasp. Then one day her rival shows up as a correspondent also.

For once, I liked the romance. I know, I know, it’s so unlike me! But it was done slowly and believable. The war front was exciting and there was a lot of unknown. Many alarms would sound and everyone had to take cover or some form of creatures would get them.

I didn’t realize this book had fantasy elements. There were very few (besides the magical typewriter) so it didn’t bother me much. But then that last page. Ok what? I have a feeling book 2 is going to be very different than book 1. There will be more fantasy and more to fight. I can’t wait! So while I was initially confused by the cover and fantasy aspect, it has now become my favorite aspect in the book. I just wish there was a bit more in this book to give me a bigger taste of what’s to come. Bring on book 2!
