My Opinion
(3.5 / 5) With book 3 just released, Orbit Publishing was offering the first book in the series for review. I have to say the synopsis grabbed me!
Earth is uninhabitable. Many have fled to space to a planet that was planned and prepared for them. Upon reaching the planet, they learn of a force keeping them from it.
I couldn’t resist! I’m loving space opera’s lately but this seemed to offer even more. A new planet? Yes please!
There are multiple POV from people in space, from one on the planet and oddly, one from a spider. Yes, I said a spider. It was weird and fabulous!
I found my attention wavering multiple times. This had a lot going for it but ultimately it didn’t grab me as I would’ve liked. There was some confusion with time periods that baffled me many times. Characters would be “waking up” again from what I assume was cryosleep and multiple years had passed. Hundreds of years sometimes. Generations had lived and died on this spaceship. It was hard for my mind to wrap around. It was difficult to picture, maybe because events seemed to happen so far apart? Or maybe there weren’t enough details? Sometimes with high fantasy, my mind just can’t grasp it. This could be what was happening. Things would happen and I’d wonder how the two scenes connected, how it went from here to there.
But the spider population? Fascinating. It was a matriarchal society that had many similarities to the spiders we all know and hate. Males were often killed after mating and more. The in-depth dive into their society was my favorite. If I didn’t know they were spiders, I would have thought it a human society.
I would have preferred more pages dedicated to humans on the new planet, but I assume that is where book 2 comes in. I’m still trying to piece a few parts of the story together in my head. For me, that’s usually not a good sign. I feel I have too many questions! Book 2 may answer those but I’m not committed yet for that. So while I am intrigued, I’m not sure I’ll continue.
