My Opinion

“There are two kinds that survive, those who persevere and those who prey.”

4 out of 5 stars (4 / 5) Mary E. Pearson has written one of my favorite YA series. She has such talent in creating worlds I love to get lost in. While I’ve only read book 1 of this series, it reminded me how much I adore the worlds she creates.

Morrighan was a character that was easy to connect with. She was tough and loyal. She was raised to fear other clans and her family moved frequently because of this. When she happens to meet Jafir, she is intrigued by his kindness, something she’s been told is not possible for his people to possess.

I’m not shy about my love for the enemies-to-lovers trope! It adds so much to the story and makes it more exciting. While the characters were enemies, it was also a forbidden romance. Watching their worlds crash together in an explosion of theatrics was exciting to say the least. The slow build-up that led to it was excellently done, keeping me entertained.

Although this is a novella (prequel), I never felt I was missing any of the story. This could be read alone or with the series. I read book 1 many years ago and appreciated the fact that I didn’t need that prior knowledge before reading this one. I believe it would only accentuate the rest of the series.

AUDIO REVIEW: There were multiple narrators who blended together seamlessly. One of the narrators was Julia Whelan who is a favorite of mine so that was a nice surprise. Each voice was separated from the others and kept pace as well. No complaints! They definitely made it more entertaining.

General content summary: little to no language, multiple killings and/or people being “stolen” (previous, no details), previous parental deaths (very few details), m/f passionate kissing (few), multiple deaths from hardship and starvation, intimacy (vague), killing violence/fighting, child physical abuse (multiple), physical violence (knife threat, multiple), theft, kidnapping and captivity, baby and others killed by animals or surroundings, killing by arrows, killing with knives (2x, few details).
