Saint (Fable #0)

Adrienne Young

YA Fantasy

New York Times bestselling author Adrienne Young returns to the world of The Narrows with Saint, a captivating prequel to Fable and Namesake.

As a boy, Elias learned the hard way what happens when you don’t heed the old tales.

Nine years after his lack of superstition got his father killed, he’s grown into a young man of piety, with a deep reverence for the hallowed sea and her fickle favor. As stories of the fisherman’s son who has managed to escape the most deadly of storms spreads from port to port, his devotion to the myths and creeds has given him the reputation of the luckiest bastard to sail the Narrows.

Now, he’s mere days away from getting everything his father ever dreamed for him: a ship of his own, a crew, and a license that names him as one of the first Narrows-born traders. But when a young dredger from the Unnamed Sea with more than one secret crosses his path, Elias’ faith will be tested like never before. The greater the pull he feels toward her, the farther he drifts from the things he’s spent the last three years working for.

He is dangerously close to repeating his mistakes and he’s seen first hand how vicious the jealous sea can be. If he’s going to survive her retribution, he will have to decide which he wants more, the love of the girl who could change their shifting world, or the sacred beliefs that earned him the name that he’s known for―Saint.

My Opinion

4 out of 5 stars (4 / 5) Ah Saint. The ever-mysterious pirate we all fell in love with in Fable and Namesake. It was great to get the backstory on him but also Isolde.

I loved getting back to this world. I didn’t realize I missed it until I wanted to listen to the other two again. I’d love to put the pieces together now, knowing the full story.

Is there another book? Do we get the other half of Saint’s face? Sigh, I doubt it but all three covers are stunning. The styling of each book was done beautifully. I’m sure every single person who owns the series displays the books face out to see the beauty. It’s just so well done and I don’t usually love faces on covers!

Saint’s story elevated the lush world Fable introduced us to. All the piratey love and dangerous people mixed with trying to make a living and racing for your dreams. It’s easy to get lost in this world. It’s a great prequel that answered my questions and gave me a deeper look into a few characters. But I adored how it worked out, how they were brought together and all that it entailed. I knew how it would end but I still would’ve liked more. More info, more length, just more! Adrienne Young books are among my fav for the easy-going writing that sweeps you in so effectively. However, she tends to be on the shorter book side and while that is still great, with writing like that, there’s always the hope for more.

AUDIO review: Stunning. It was so easy to just get lost while listening. I’d find myself stopping to listen instead of staying busy. Both narrators fit the characters well and had me entranced from the start. I loved hearing the emotion behind their voices that brought so much more to the story.

General content summary: The content for a YA book is well within where I feel it should be. There was intimacy but it was a closed door scene, violence but few details, and very little language. It’s a great story most anyone could read and appreciate. Little language, alcohol (few), stabbing a man in the hand, previous parental drownings, something similar to a blood oath (cutting a hand), bar fight (fists, knife, bottles broken over heads), m/f kisses (3x), intimacy assumed (one shirt coming off then scene closed then woke up in same bed), fist fight (men women some blood).

Thank you to Wednesday Books and Goodreads for the giveaway win! Thank you to MacMillan Audio for the audio copy!

The book releases November 29, 2022.
