This Woven Kingdom (This Woven Kingdom #1)

Tahereh Mafi

YA Fantasy

Clashing empires, forbidden romance, and a long-forgotten queen destined to save her people—bestselling author Tahereh Mafi’s first in an epic, romantic trilogy inspired by Persian mythology.

To all the world, Alizeh is a disposable servant, not the long-lost heir to an ancient Jinn kingdom forced to hide in plain sight.

The crown prince, Kamran, has heard the prophecies foretelling the death of his king. But he could never have imagined that the servant girl with the strange eyes, the girl he can’t put out of his mind, would one day soon uproot his kingdom—and the world.

Perfect for fans of Leigh Bardugo, Tomi Adeyemi, and Sabaa Tahir, this is the explosive first book in a new fantasy trilogy from the New York Times bestselling and National Book Award-nominated author Tahereh Mafi.

My Opinion

4 out of 5 stars (4 / 5) This was #openlybookedbookclub pick for July and most of us loved it!

Alizeh is a queen of a Jinn empire that is hiding in plain site. Her family and many Jinn have been killed. She hopes to one day be able to reunite her people but until then she takes lowly jobs to survive. Kamran is the prince who can’t get her out of his mind.

A lost queen? My new love of Jinn? A forbidden romance? This has all the makings of an amazing fantasy and I loved it! Alizeh is a great MC who stays as hidden as possible, trying not to bring attention to herself. And yet, she still manages to catch the prince’s eye. Kamran has a heart of gold and loyalty to match. Minus the intsta-love trope, I really liked these two.

I liked the romance even if it happened a bit quick for me. The steady pace with interesting story elements throughout (even hints of Cinderella!) kept it moving well. I would’ve liked more Jinn backstory but I’m hoping book 2 fills that in. Speaking of book 2, that was quite the cliffhanger!

General content summary: No/minimal language, parental deaths (multiple), physical violence, attempted suicide (few details), previous beheading, Jinn are hunted and killed brutally, a previous death in a fire, deaths by physical violence (multiple), kisses, child sees his father’s head after being beheaded, attempted suicide by drowning.
