When You Are Mine

Michael Robotham

In this page-turning psychological thriller from an author who Stephen King called “an absolute master,” a young female police officer faces danger on all fronts—from a clever victim of abuse, her colleagues on the force, and even her own mobster father.

Philomena McCarthy is a young, ambitious police office with the elite Metropolitan Police in London. When she responds to a domestic violence call, she finds the victim, Tempe Brown, trying to protect her abuser, a married man named Darren Goodall, a decorated Scotland Yard detective afraid of no one. As Philomena pursues the case against him, she not only encounters resistance from her police force colleagues but also becomes dangerously entangled with the victim—who is not at all whom she appears to be—much to the increasing endangerment of herself and Henry, her fiancée.

Complicating matters is Philomena’s estranged father Edward McCarthy, a powerful man who has built a criminal empire along with his brothers. Philomena has long tried to pursue her career as a police officer without her father’s involvement, but as she falls under suspicion of stalking and harassing Goodall, her father becomes involved.

As the situation escalates, Tempe’s sinister maneuvers further entangle Philomena in a web of secrets, corruption, and murder, putting Philomena’s impending marriage, career, and very survival in jeopardy…

Spellbinding, suspenseful, and filled with complex characters that could be heroes or villains, Robotham has crafted a smart and propulsive thriller that’s impossible to put down.

My Opinion

“Good never prevails. It simply treads water and waits for the bad to show up again.”

4.5 out of 5 stars (4.5 / 5) Philomena is a caring cop who unfortunately has a powerful mobster as her father. When she starts to string together domestic abuse complaints to a decorated officer, she takes it into her own hands.

She does what she feels is right and moral, only for it to come back on her. Having a mobster as her father is held against her and what could goes wrong, does, but worse than she could have imagined.

I was asked to do a feature on this book. I had every intention of doing that, until I started reading it. I tell you, the writing, the injustice of a cop doing a great job and being punished for it, another cop getting away with crimes and so much more was so well done. I couldn’t just feature this book, I knew I needed to immerse myself in it!

Police crime books are hit and miss for me. But I never felt a lull in this one and completely adored Philomena and also her father. The crimes and twists had me unable to guess what was next and be completely glued to the story. I did feel that the end wrapped up just a bit too perfectly but most people will love that.

All I can say is, where has Robotham been all my life? I’ve downloaded audiobooks of his to engross myself in his writings.

  1. I love it when books surprise us in a good way.

I can’t read cop stories or real-life crime stories. Not good for my anxiety.

  2. Crime books/tv shows are also hit or miss for me. It drives me crazy when the science is incorrect but I’m glad this one worked out for you!
