Jade City (The Green Bone Saga #1)

Fonda Lee

JADE CITY is a gripping Godfather-esque saga of intergenerational blood feuds, vicious politics, magic, and kungfu.

The Kaul family is one of two crime syndicates that control the island of Kekon. It’s the only place in the world that produces rare magical jade, which grants those with the right training and heritage superhuman abilities.
The Green Bone clans of honorable jade-wearing warriors once protected the island from foreign invasion–but nowadays, in a bustling post-war metropolis full of fast cars and foreign money, Green Bone families like the Kauls are primarily involved in commerce, construction, and the everyday upkeep of the districts under their protection.
When the simmering tension between the Kauls and their greatest rivals erupts into open violence in the streets, the outcome of this clan war will determine the fate of all Green Bones and the future of Kekon itself.

My Opinion

4.5 out of 5 stars (4.5 / 5) I knew I needed to pick up this book after hearing raving reviews from many Bookstagrammer friends.

Janloon is a city separated by two ruling clans. Magic is available in this city through jade stones. Some are trained and build up their strength and endurance then add Jade to enhance their abilities. These enhancements make them elite in every way and their fighting abilities increase. Not everyone is able to withstand jade as it will breakdown your system if you are not trained properly.

The fighting was one of my favorite facets. It is a mix of martial arts with jade magic thrown in. It is intense, brutal and ruthless. I loved every second! The strategy and political maneuvering kept my interest throughout. It was interesting to see what is perceived as weakness, or strength, what is deemed acceptable and what is not. Strategy for the clan was vital and it was fascinating to see it play out.

The characters are done well! There are four main characters with many side characters. It was easy to tell them apart (I was worried!) and to keep track who went with whom. I was surprised that each story line flowed well enough to come together at the end with no problems. The end had multiple twists and I was shocked by the turn the story took.

Book 3 is out soon so I will be blazing through book 2 in time. This may be a new favorite series of mine!

Content Summary: F words: 20, detailed sex, gang fights and more, blood, infidelity. The fighting, blood and violence is high in this book.
