Amelia Unabridged

Ashley Schumacher

Sparks fly between two teens as they grapple with grief, love, and the future.

Eighteen-year-old Amelia Griffin is obsessed with the famous Orman Chronicles, written by the young and reclusive prodigy N. E. Endsley. They’re the books that brought her and her best friend Jenna together after Amelia’s father left and her family imploded. So when Amelia and Jenna get the opportunity to attend a book festival with Endsley in attendance, Amelia is ecstatic. It’s the perfect way to start off their last summer before college.

In a heartbeat, everything goes horribly wrong. When Jenna gets a chance to meet the author and Amelia doesn’t, the two have a blowout fight like they’ve never experienced. And before Amelia has a chance to mend things, Jenna is killed in a freak car accident. Grief-stricken, and without her best friend to guide her, Amelia questions everything she had planned for the future.

When a mysterious, rare edition of the Orman Chronicles arrives, Amelia is convinced that it somehow came from Jenna. Tracking the book to an obscure but enchanting bookstore in Michigan, Amelia is shocked to find herself face-to-face with the enigmatic and handsome N. E. Endsley himself, the reason for Amelia’s and Jenna’s fight and perhaps the clue to what Jenna wanted to tell her all along.

My Opinion

“There is nothing in the world a good book can’t cure.”

4.5 out of 5 stars (4.5 / 5) I really liked this one! I admit I chose this audio out of quite of a few others, purely for the cover. You know me, I’m a sucker for a good cover!

It’s a story about two broken people finding each other. They have both lost people unexpectedly and really are trying to figure out life without these loved ones. It’s purely chance (or maybe fate) that they meet and it’s a beautiful story of love, loss, heartbreak and putting those pieces back together.

Initially I was worried this book would be too much for me. Grief can be done really well but leave you with that heavy, inconsolable feeling. This book wasn’t like that. While Schumacher described brief well, it didn’t pummel me with dark feelings that so often accompany it. The grief was there, it just didn’t hit me hard. There is a delicate balance in writing to achieve that!

I grew to love the characters. From Amelia and Jenna to Val and Alex and everyone in between. If I ever open a bookstore (small dream on my part) I want it to feel like Val’s. It sounds like pure heaven. Books galore, rooms to read, ambience with fantasy decor but also music, and of course a cafe. There are even opportunities for cookbook writers to come show off their recipes. Brilliant. It is a book lover’s haven. The descriptions of books and their love for them hit me in the feels. Yes, this is how I feel too! The escape of books was perfectly described. That is why I read. When a book just makes sense right from the start and the author can put words to the feelings I’ve never been able to describe.

This is Schumacher’s debut novel and I’m impressed! The writing is fantastic with almost a poetic feel to it. It’s refined and had me from the start. I will be watching this author!

Content Summary: This one had very low content. Language and intimacy were kept at a minimum, there was no violence. The only aspect I’d be concerned about is the grief and the events that bring about the deaths that cause the grief (see the Potentially Intense Themes section).
