Glass Sword (Red Queen #2)

Victoria Aveyard

If there’s one thing Mare Barrow knows, it’s that she’s different.

Mare Barrow’s blood is red—the color of common folk—but her Silver ability, the power to control lightning, has turned her into a weapon that the royal court tries to control.

The crown calls her an impossibility, a fake, but as she makes her escape from Maven, the prince—the friend—who betrayed her, Mare uncovers something startling: she is not the only one of her kind.

Pursued by Maven, now a vindictive king, Mare sets out to find and recruit other Red-and-Silver fighters to join in the struggle against her oppressors.

But Mare finds herself on a deadly path, at risk of becoming exactly the kind of monster she is trying to defeat.

Will she shatter under the weight of the lives that are the cost of rebellion? Or have treachery and betrayal hardened her forever?

The electrifying next installment in the Red Queen series escalates the struggle between the growing rebel army and the blood-segregated world they’ve always known—and pits Mare against the darkness that has grown in her soul.

My Opinion

“My enemies know me best. My family doesn’t know me at all.”

4 out of 5 stars (4 / 5) The book opens into the midst of a battle, right where book one left off. It’s easy to get sucked in. The duplicity from book one is causing pain and anger but mostly has an effect on the world around.

Mare has turned bitter about the turn her life has taken. She is thoughtless to others and makes rash decisions, sometimes with dire consequences. “It isn’t hard to let people die when their deaths give life to something else.” She values life less and less but feels the pain of each life lost more and more.

We get to know Cal quite a bit more in the book and I love his character. He’s strong and is in a precarious position with the Reds, but not wanted by the Silvers. I love the drama that this brings and you can hear the anguish in Cal and how it affects him. He doesn’t belong anywhere.

We are introduced to many more characters in this book and they bring many new abilities and personalities. It does have a few heartbreaking moments but is adventurous throughout.

A note for book 3; I’m not sure I will be able to get to book three very soon, so as a note, I do know that a main character is a lesbian (no details that I remember other than kissing and waking up in bed next to each other) and there is at least one sex scene between a man (18yo or so) and a young woman. Message me if you need more details and I will hopefully get to book 3, 4 soon.
