My Opinion

(3 / 5) I’m rating this one 3 stars because I found my mind wandering many times. Normally I’m intrigued enough to continue the series but I found I have no interest in continuing this. Normally at 3.5 stars, I will continue the series.

It has all the elements of a great fantasy; mermaids, pirates, magic, secrets and lies. The magic system did not make sense to me. There were different versions of magic and I never paid attention enough to see which one did what.

I think a lot with like this but it just wasn’t for me.

Content Summary: There is a bit of intimacy that may be too much for younger readers. The violence was heavy at times. The blood magic was fairly intense at times with details to match.

To perform an execution with magic, a young woman needs blood of the person to be executed. He spits out a tooth and drips blood from his mouth. She snaps off a finger bone of his and takes more teeth as he screams. She tears him apart, bone by bone as he screams and people watch. 

A young man cuts off a young man’s hand with a sword.

A young woman jams a blade into a man’s shoulder. He kicks her in the stomach. Many fight back and forth, using knives and more. A finger falls off. She uses his blood to use magic. She threatens to kill them all with her magic. She uses her magic to burn a man. 

A young woman has been held hostage. She wears few clothes and has many bruises. Abuse and rape is suspected but vaguely mentioned. Men throw rocks at a group of teens. A young man is hit many times. 

A young woman mermaid pulls a man under the water to kill him. She resurfaces with blood on her lips. 

A creature attacks a ship injuring a young man and young woman. She gets poisoned barbs to her back and passes out, falling into the ocean. 

A young woman has taken many lives. 

A young woman plunges a knife into a young woman’s gut. Blood drips from her mouth and she falls to the ground, convulsing and dies. A young man tries to stop the blood. A young man stabs a young man in the chest, not enough to kill. A young woman slices a young man’s arm. They stab and cut each other multiple times. A young woman uses magic to burn inside a young man’s mouth. He writhes, screams and bleeds. 

12 people have previously died. A man is secretly using magic to kill them. 

Magic requires blood. There are many times someone cuts the self or another for their blood. One woman does it viciously and smacks a man’s head on the ground after mixing their bloods. 

A group of people fight with knives and swords. They need each other’s blood and hair to perform magic and many succeed. 

A young woman orders a mermaid to drown their enemies. Many go under the water. Bodies are strewn along the sand in blood. A young woman watches a woman get killed with a sword. A woman uses magic and causes a young woman’s skin to burn and peel back. A young woman stabs a man in the gut with a sword then cuts across his neck as blood spills and he chokes on it.  A man throws a knife into a young woman’s shoulder. A woman plunges a poisoned sword into a man’s chest. A young woman has been stabbed in the gut, blood covering her. Many are injured. A man tortures a man with magic, causing pain and wounds. A man plunges a sword into his stomach, killing himself.  Fire is all around. A man takes the man’s blood and smears it in his own lips. A young man has magic attacking him. Blood dribbles out of his mouth as he staggers.  Blood then dribbles down a young woman’s chin. She thrusts a knife into a man’s keg and twists. Then thrusts two into his chest, and his blood drips onto her face. A young man cuts off a man’s hand. 

Hundreds of people die in a battle. 

Potentially Intense Themes

A creature has 8 tentacles made of sharp hooks. Legend says no one survives its encounter. 

Three teens almost drown.
