The Princess Knight (The Scarred Earth Saga #2)

G.A. Aiken

In New York Times bestselling author G.A. Aiken’s gripping new fantasy romance series, the Blacksmith Queen must confront armies and pretenders desperate to take her new-won crown. But with the Princess Knight at her side and a centaur warrior clan at her back, she’ll risk everything for victory . . .

LONG LIVE THE QUEEN

Gemma Smythe dedicated her life to the glory of battle. With her fellow War Monks, she worshipped the war gods, rained destruction on her enemies, and raised the dead when the fancy took her. Until her sister Keeley became the prophesied Blacksmith Queen, and Gemma broke faith with her order to journey to the Amichai Mountain and fight by Keeley’s side.

The Amichai warriors are an unruly, never-to-be-tamed lot, especially their leader-in-waiting, Quinn. But when the War Monks declare support for Gemma’s ruthless younger sister Beatrix, the immaturity of her key ally is the least of Gemma’s problems. She has to get to the grand masters, dispel their grudge against her, and persuade them to fight for Keeley and justice. If her conviction can’t sway them, perhaps Quinn’s irritating, irreverent, clearly unhinged, ferocity will win the day…

My Opinion

3.5 out of 5 stars (3.5 / 5) I listened to book 1 on a whim because a friend told me how much she enjoyed it. I devoured and loved it! I quickly requested book 2 and Kensington Books was kind enough to send an ARC to placate my desires.

I had high expectations for this book, and while I liked it, I didn’t love it. A few things were different. For one, I truly believe the audio added so much. Apparently my inner voice doesn’t do justice to the narration. So kudos to the narrator for a job well done. Secondly, the POV changed. In book 1, we have Keeley who is caring and sensitive and raucous. She’s aggressive and loving and loud. I loved her! She was so unique. But Keeley takes a step back and Gemma, her war monk sister is the main POV. I liked Gemma, but I wasn’t as entertained or connected to her as I was her sister. I think changing POV in a series can be difficult when people start expecting something specific. It just didn’t jive with me for this one.

The world building was done very well. It started dense and exciting in book 1 and continued building. The animals and creatures are endearing while giving me zombie and killer vibes at the same time. To make something so feared and so wonderful is remarkable writing.

The ability Aiken has to carry so much humor, adventure, sarcasm, loyalty, fear and corruption is astounding. I see talent in her writing and am curious about her other works. However, they all have shiny man chests on them so I’m betting they’re more on the steamy side!

The content summary includes much language, much gore and blood and one descriptive sex scene.

Book 3 is hinting at DRAGONS and it sounds just as exciting as the first two!

Thank you again to Kensington Books for gifting me with this book, it releases today!

  1. This sounds like a good series! That’s so odd that the second book just swapped POV’s instead of including them both 🤷🏻‍♀️ Would you consider listening to the audio to see if you like it more?
