Fable (Fable #1)

Adrienne Young

As the daughter of the most powerful trader in the Narrows, the sea is the only home seventeen-year-old Fable has ever known. It’s been four years since the night she watched her mother drown during an unforgiving storm. The next day her father abandoned her on a legendary island filled with thieves and little food. To survive she must keep to herself, learn to trust no one and rely on the unique skills her mother taught her. The only thing that keeps her going is the goal of getting off the island, finding her father and demanding her rightful place beside him and his crew. To do so Fable enlists the help of a young trader named West to get her off the island and across the Narrows to her father.

But her father’s rivalries and the dangers of his trading enterprise have only multiplied since she last saw him and Fable soon finds that West isn’t who he seems. Together, they will have to survive more than the treacherous storms that haunt the Narrows if they’re going to stay alive.

Welcome to a world made dangerous by the sea and by those who wish to profit from it. Where a young girl must find her place and her family while trying to survive in a world built for men.

My Opinion

4.5 out of 5 stars (4.5 / 5) At 14, Fable is dropped on an island and forced to make her way on her own.  For years she fights with thieves and the land for survival.  She’s able to fend for herself and earn enough for passage aboard the Marigold on the way to find her father. West is the captain and an interesting character.  There is a lot of mystery behind him and his grey morals. He definitely makes a fun side character and I look forward to learning more about him.

This book has all the pirate feels without actually being pirates.  Fable truly learns what she is made of, and the meaning of home and family.  She finds loyalty in a world of no trust.

The romance was one aspect I did not love. It felt very sudden and not as developed as I would’ve liked it to be.  It would’ve been more believable with a few stolen looks or examination of feelings. However, I like that it happened and feel it will be a good addition to book two. Another thing I was not super impressed with was the character development. I don’t feel that I “know” the characters very well, there needed to be more depth to them. That being said, I still was very entertained with this book, enough so that it was easy to let that slide. I will absolutely read book 2.

I’m very impressed with the low content of this book. It is very popular and sought after right now and I feel the low content broadens the reach of possible readers. There is some intimacy, but the details fall within YA standards and stop at an appropriate time. The violence has some intense moments with death and such but details are limited.

Thank you to MacMillan Audio and Wednesday Books for the audio copy in exchange for an honest review. I devoured it in less than 24 hours and even got a deep clean for the bathroom in. Thank you Fable!
