Beneath the Stars (Sugarlake #1)

Emily McIntire

Alina
I was eleven when I met Chase Adams. I loved him before I knew what lovin’ was.
I pulled, he pushed.
I gave, he took.
I loved… I lost.
Now he’s back. All grown up and sexy as sin.
But things changed while he was gone. So, he can show those dimples and flex those muscles all he wants. It won’t change a thing.
Chase Adams is nothin’ but a lost memory. I’ll do everything I can to keep him that way.

Chase
Growing up, there were only two women I ever loved.
Neither one of them ever really loved my back.
Until her. Alina. My Goldi.
She was everything that’s good. I was the bad.
She was the brightest goddamn star. I was the black hole shredding her to pieces.
I loved her wrong, losing her to my demons.
But now I’m back. A better man.
I’ll do everything I can to make her remember us, even if all she wants is to forget.

My Opinion

“You can’t go back and change the beginning, but you can start where you are and change the ending.”

4 out of 5 stars (4 / 5) My thoughts are everywhere with this one. McIntire is a beautiful writer. She was able to draw me into a story right from the start. She has the ability to write the words to draw out emotions very easily. She was able to bring in heavy subjects and describe the pain and anger that accompany these subjects with great descriptions that made me feel a slew of emotions.

Alina and Chase are characters that are easy to love despite, or maybe because of, their flawed characters. They meet as young kids and feel a connection that lasts into their adulthood. They go on quite a journey with and without each other, but their hearts and thoughts are never far.

Trigger points and content are high in this book. There is language (including many F words), very detailed intimacy (teens and adults), masturbation, underage drinking, attempted sexual abuse, severe alcoholism, hard drugs and overdosing, child neglect, and death of a parent.

This was too steamy for my taste but I highly recommend this to those who love sensual romance. The kindle is on Kindle Unlimited or it’s $2.99 to order your own copy. It comes out September 1, 2020.

Thank you to Emily McIntire for the opportunity to read her debut book in exchange for an honest review.

  1. I love me the occasional romance but I usually read for the more lighthearted ones because I use them as palate cleansers between heavier books🤷🏻‍♀️
