My Opinion

4 out of 5 stars (4 / 5) This was hilarious!  I have never laughed so many times during an audio.  The narrator has the perfect voice to portray drama and I loved it.  I honestly wonder if the physical book is as funny or if it’s just the audio? The narrator was phenomenal.  He perfectly portrays a quirky, queer teen boy that is endearing and very unsure of himself but also highly dramatic.

We start out in Nick’s fan fiction story. From there, we are taken into Nick’s life where he deals with ADHD and typical high school drama. Nick is easily loveable and has an array of hilarious friends that are truly the friends everyone should have. They’re loyal, sarcastic and so funny.

While the story focuses on Nick’s obsession with the Extraordinaries superhero’s, it delves into deeper, meaningful thoughts about life, loss of a loved one, having a disorder, where true support comes and the importance of that support. Nick’s dad is probably my favorite character and I just want someone to give that man a hug for being such a great dad.

The story was a tad bit predictable but it didn’t bother me a bit.  I was engaged throughout and loved that not only did we have queer characters, but we had an array of different races also.  The ending was fun and concluded well but still made me very excited for book two.

The content is high for language and intimacy. This is an LGBTQ novel, it is talked about often and there are many sexual comments or innuendo. Honestly, I would’ve rated it higher if there wasn’t such a high amount of sexual content. It felt too much to be considered young adult. Violence is medium with some fighting but very little blood.

Thank you Libro.fm, Tor Teen, T.J. Klune and MacMillan Audio for the free ALC copy in exchange for an honest review. This book is out July 14, 2020.

The Extraordinaries (The Extraordinaries #1)

T.J. Klune

Some people are extraordinary. Some are just extra. TJ Klune’s YA debut, The Extraordinaries, is a queer coming-of-age story about a fanboy with ADHD and the heroes he loves.

Nick Bell? Not extraordinary. But being the most popular fanfiction writer in the Extraordinaries fandom is a superpower, right?

After a chance encounter with Shadow Star, Nova City’s mightiest hero (and Nick’s biggest crush), Nick sets out to make himself extraordinary. And he’ll do it with or without the reluctant help of Seth Gray, Nick’s best friend (and maybe the love of his life).

A young man kisses a young man. “It felt like coming home.” He swipes his tongue against his lip. “I’m going to climb you like a tree later.” They kiss again and vow many more.

A son comments to his dad that he’s a virgin. The dad asks him to stay that way for a bit. The son agrees but would love it taken away “spectacularly.”

“High school sucked balls.”
