The Guest List

Lucy Foley

Set on a remote island off the Irish coast, this is one guest list no one would want to be on, just as no one would have wanted an invitation to the New Year’s Eve party in Foley’s previous novel, The Hunting Party . Lives unravel amid the revelry on an eerie and remote island as family and friends assemble for a glam wedding in an updated Murder on the Orient Express. Each of the principal characters has a reason to want one of their number dead, there are old secrets, and one of them is murdered.

My Opinion

3.5 out of 5 stars (3.5 / 5) I loved listening to this with the different narrators and all the lovely accents. I could listen to that all day. I channeled my distant Irish relatives and locked in on that accent. Beautiful! The multiple POVs were very fun, very informative and very interesting. You’re able to hear from each character, learn their flaws (there were a lot of flaws!) and get juicy details about each of the characters. Having this be spread over only a few days at a wedding made it feel more intense and added pressure to the guests. So much dirty laundry was aired that it was just barely survivable. But there was an awesome twist at the end that I didn’t see coming.

I like how the author slowly gave out details. You find out right off that someone has been killed. You pick up details and make assumptions all throughout until the very end where she just pulls the rug out from under you. I liked being surprised by that.

All in all, it was an enjoyable read but not a favorite. The drama was too much for me. While entertaining, it was almost too much to grasp because none of it was small, it was all very big, heavy problems that were exaggerated because of the wedding.

The content had language (including many f words), and triggers such as cutting and abortion and obviously violence.

Thank you to Libro.fm, Harper Audio and Lucy Foley for the opportunity to listen to this ALC in exchange for an honest review. This book is out June 2, 2020.
