My Opinion

3 out of 5 stars (3 / 5) This book confused me a lot. It’s a weird mix of contemporary and fantasy and I don’t think that flowed. I kept expecting a different reasoning for the fantasy elements. Once I latched onto the fantasy, it got better, but I wish that would’ve been different.

That being said, Ness is a great writer. I really enjoyed the main character and his way of thinking. He was someone I could relate to, regardless of what he was going through. Ness was able to portray the kids lives very accurately and their relationships were very touching.

For the content, language was medium. There were a few F words but mostly teen stereotypical language. Sex was talked about and referred to but no real details. There were crude sexual remarks and guys referring to their body parts a few times. There is talk of guys dating guys and it happens a few times. Violence is minimum. Intense Themes had quite a few points due to the fantasy elements, car accidents, teens dying and emotional problems the teens have.

The Rest of Us Just Live Here

Patrick Ness

What if you aren’t the Chosen One? The one who’s supposed to fight the zombies, or the soul-eating ghosts, or whatever the heck this new thing is, with the blue lights and the death? What if you’re like Mikey? Who just wants to graduate and go to prom and maybe finally work up the courage to ask Henna out before someone goes and blows up the high school. Again. Because sometimes there are problems bigger than this week’s end of the world, and sometimes you just have to find the extraordinary in your ordinary life. Even if your best friend is worshiped by mountain lions.
