My Opinion

3.5 out of 5 stars (3.5 / 5) I liked it but I didn’t love it. I can see how most people would love it though. It had a small Harry Potter vibe and lots of that type of magic. I think I went into it expecting it to wow me and when it didn’t, I had a harder time liking it.

The main character started out young and immature and I had a hard time imagining her older and mature after that. When hints of a romance started I really struggled to believe it. I liked the characters but I wasn’t invested in them and I didn’t feel there was enough between them to be devoted to each other.

For the content, I think most readers could read this. Potentially even younger kids (noting the small amount of intimacy ahead of time). The violence was about the same as Harry Potter and as long as magic and creatures and the things that can happen when those two things are combined is something they can handle, I believe most anyone could read it.

Sorcery of Thorns

Margaret Rogerson

All sorcerers are evil. Elisabeth has known that as long as she has known anything. Raised as a foundling in one of Austermeer’s Great Library’s, Elisabeth has grown up among the tools of sorcery–magical grimoires that whisper on the shelves and rattle beneath the chains. If provoked, they transform into grotesque monsters of ink and leather. She hopes to become a warden, charged with protecting the kingdom from their power.

Then an act of sabotage releases the library’s most dangerous grimoire. Elisabeth’s desperate intervention implicates her in the crime, and she is torn from her home to face justice in the capital. With no one to turn to but her sworn enemy, the sorcerer Nathaniel Thorn, and his mysterious demonic servant, she finds herself entangled in a centuries-old conspiracy. Not only could the Great Libraries go up in flames, but the world along with them.

As her alliance with Nathaniel grows stronger, Elisabeth starts to question everything she’s been taught– about sorcerers, about the libraries she so loves, even about herself. For Elisabeth has a power she has never guessed, and a future she could never have imagined.
